Elephanta Caves

This is a most famous place for tourist. Which is located nearest to Mumbai, at Gharapuri, Maharashtra state, India. This caves are best example of art where all the idols made from rocks cut. Around 5th century this caves are made. Before 16th century this known as "Dharpuri". Portuguese found one idol of elephant so that they gave name "Caves of Elephanta".  

There is a big round shaped Shiv temple. Many numbers of Lord Shiva's idol are carved in different different styles like holding Gangaji in his hair, killing the Andhak, with goddess Parvati, etc. The main famous temple is the idol of  "Trimurti"- Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh. The pillars of the caves are much decorated using carving. The idol of  Natraj- the lord of dance also much famous.
